The entire point of a CV is to win you an interview, so it might seem a rather obvious point to make to those pursuing jobs in sales that they need to ensure their CV is good in this regard.
It is especially important to have confidence in your CV and everything in it, so that you can refer to it continually during the interview itself to back up your points.
Why is the link between CV and interview so important?
You might think that once a sales recruitment agency has made the decision to call you to interview, your CV’s job is done – it has won you an interview, and you will need to be prepared to talk about many more things in the interview than what your CV refers to. Otherwise, why would they bother to interview you at all?
As logical as this view seems, it forgets that your CV is intended to be a ‘snapshot’ of your candidacy – you will be expected during your interview to refer to and expand on the outline that your CV provides, rather than talk about other things entirely.
Many interviewers tailor their approach to what is on your CV, and may challenge you on any ‘holes’ – for example, if there is an unexplained gap in employment on your CV or you have been vague about the exact contribution that you made as a team member in your last role.
Using your CV to guide an interview
One of the great things about having a good CV – and being well-versed in its contents – is how you can use it to direct and influence an interviewer.
There will always be times, for example, when the interviewer isn’t asking questions that allow you to show off your strengths. In that situation, you may ask a question about the job, let the interviewer reply and then refer back to your strengths and achievements – for example, linking back to a specific example of how you persuaded an uncertain customer.
You may also explicitly offer to talk the interviewer through your CV, so that the interview is kept in areas of discussion that best help you to showcase your positive traits.
It is advisable to bring a copy of your CV with you to the interview. Some people interviewing for jobs in sales may have barely read your CV at all, so you should take your chance to highlight your achievements and skills in a way that doesn’t come across as pushy or impatient.
After all, you should remember that even if the interviewer seems nervous or inexperienced, it is still your task to demonstrate that you would be a pleasure to work with!
